No matter that we've known about the dangers and harms (and barely useful-ness) of these so-called alternative energies (which they seem to make such a HUGE mess of - I mean windmills have been used for a very long time without destroying things, etc.) it doesn't seem to stop people wanting to make their fortunes from it and that includes that Bozo RFK. The ideas seem to get more outlandish by the year. Nice compilation. Hope you're well. Your brain is doing great, that's for sure! 😀 ♥️
Yes indeed. And you're correct when you refer to "fortunes". There is big money involved. I was very well paid when I was in the wind industry. Getting out was not a difficult decision though once I saw the actual numbers. Saw how fraudulent it was. Not why I got into engineering.
As for the materials they use! I have seen blades broken off and dismantled structures and I wonder how long they take to degrade. Not in our lifetimes that's for sure. I'm a big fan of windmills (lived in the Netherlands for a while a few decades ago) and their blades were made of wood. A great material. Used to pump water or run mills for making flour etc. - a great use. If there were problems (a broken blade for example), pop into the local forest, chop down a tree, make a new blade and you're bank in business within weeks. Today with the (very vulnerable) materials they use, not only is getting a replacement financially a costly exercise, it might take many months to get back on line.
I used to play hockey (about 30+ years ago) with a mixed group (men and women) from the NDP party in Ottawa. They were the "idealists" the so-called socialists, the naturalists, etc. Well the truth is they were as power and money hungry as anyone else who worked in politics. Really a big disappointment to my young heart but I didn't really realize the full import of what I was seeing until a long time later. A couple of them were working really hard to get wind energy projects off the ground - they had knowledge of the inside tracks because they worked for politicians but they were having trouble breaking into the markets it seemed. I don't know how far they got but I think they were truly thinking they could make a good living and 'save the environment' at the same time. I wasn't altogether certain which reason held more weight but it felt like the money was the real goal. It was before the big mega wind farms made by Koreans. It was interesting to see it develop and how good people go bad.
I love that you had the heart, soul and guts to get out of the industry. I love that you love wooden windmills. I do too and often wondered why we aren't using all the beautiful, natural, old technologies. I hadn't thought of the blade replacement - just chop down a tree and voilà! Just so wonderful! And we haven't even mentioned the cost of wildlife from those gigantic wind monsters. How it shortens the lives of local people and flora and fauna. "Alternative energy" has become nothing more than an embarrassing blight on humanity. It's like we really do have a deathwish for the planet. It's not just the boys at the top whose job it is to kill us off, it's the zombies who will do anything to make money.
Ever great that you lived in the Netherlands too! Wowee! Did you get a pair of wooden shoes? LOL. When introduced to the wooden shoes in grade school, we were all quite obsessed with the idea. What were you doing there please?
Oh the ecological cost is enormous just from the wind turbines above ground. Not to mention the actual production of the 'farms' themselves, the access roads, pads...and the hardware. And what you can't see that's underground. Not many know nothing lives under or around the turbines in the soil; no microbes, no worms...no nothing. Complete dead zones as far as I understand. It's the slow freq. vibration caused by the turbine blades. Wooof wooof wooof...
It's funny you refer to 'socialists' etc. I was the same, until I realised it was a con. Started referring to Unionists as 'failed capitalists' 20+ years ago when I worked in politics. And started having dealings with these people.
Naturalists who aren't prepared to do the work. I was doing permaculture on my 50 acre property when poisoned. Really miss gardening.
I am painfully aware of all that 'collateral' damage from the turbines. It's very sickening. It took me a lot longer than you, I think, to realize the con of socialism. I don't think they're failed capitalists though, I think they just found another way to be capitalist while pretending to be morally superior. So you were in politics too!? Wow... Naturalists are kind of dreamers ... We need dreamers too! 🤔 💭 Not everyone is as well rounded as yourself or as capable in so many areas.
I'm sorry you're missing gardening. Permaculture is definitely cutting edge even still and quite wonderful. I hope you have a goal for when you're going to be done with the poisoning - haven't you suffered enough? You aren't still being poisoned, are you? Or are you?
I would just love to be sitting on the back porch with you having a cup of tea, rocking in a chair and chatting about everything! xo ♥️
Had to sell my property when things looked grim and I was sorting my affairs. Would love to be doing permaculture again though. One day maybe - fingers crossed 🤞
It looks like you read my comment before I added this paragraph so I'm posting it here so you get to read it. .... Ever great that you lived in the Netherlands too! Wowee! Now called (I think) Emerson Process Control or similar. Not even sure it is in Veenendaal anymore. About a 20min train ride from where I lived.
Was always amazed by the women; mini skirts w/o stockings in the winter when it was cold enough to freeze the saltwater canals!! Tough women. Meanwhile I was wearing trousers and thermals.
Craig you're so funny - your first two sentences, together - perfect! Made me laugh. Then your last paragraph. 🤣
Looks like a really interesting place where you lived! Also pretty interesting that a Kiwi was working in the Netherlands for a U.S. company! LOL. Oh what an interesting town Veenendaal seems to be! Were you riding a bicycle around there as well after you disembarked from the train? That must bring back such memories! Kind of like a bit of a fairy tale if you ask me. Thanks for leaving the links - they were very nice to see. How old were you at the time?
You've had a very full life so far, now you're doing your Job phase. I'm certain you know about it but there's nothing like looking at a definition to convey a meaning. "The Book of Job is a biblical text found in both the Jewish and Christian canons, telling the story of Job, a wealthy, God-fearing man who undergoes immense suffering. It explores themes of unmerited suffering, the nature of God's justice, and the importance of trusting in God even when faced with adversity. " Does it seem like that sometimes Craig?
No, walking everywhere (I was very fit then), though sometimes used a bike when I visited cities or public parks etc. - they were everywhere and free to use. It does bring back memories. I was 26 at the time. Young and restless.
I must re-read Job. It's been years since I did. Maybe you're right! Haven't really thought about things like that - just feeling sorry for myself and pissed off. A very good idea.
You rule (how do I add an emoji! heart emoji here!).
Ah, 26 years old is a fine age. You'd already been to China by then, hadn't you? I think I would like having free bikes everywhere. I've had my own for most of my adult life though. First one was vandalized a few times and then finally stolen. I've had my current bike for 10+ years now and I'm thinking of getting a new one.
LOL - you still haven't figured out the emoji thing! I use a computer so all that stuff is easy. Are you on a phone? I don't have a cell phone so I'm of no use on that account. Why not google it? And thank you for the compliment. I feel a great deal of affection for you Craig - I love your mind and POV. xo 🤗
The Young and The Restless is the name of a daytime Soap Opera in North America! LOL. My sister-in-law's favourite! 😀. Oh to be young and restless again! *Sigh*
I did see it Craig! 🤗. Thank you for making sure - see my reply just above your comment. It was a direct reply to your post where you made the emoji comment. xo ♥️
Nice breakdown. You can add evaporation to the entropy mix for Onslow. It's quite shallow and has a huge surface area. I doubt this was added to the calculations.
For a bit more in the offshore wind I have hit the eye watering numbers a few times in the past.
Yes. Totally agree. Evaporation is potentially significant as it gets rather warm down there in the summer. I was pretty unwell when I wrote it and was trying to keep it at simple as possible. Back of the envelope type. Having aa dig at the then Minister Megan Woods - who I know personally and (to my shame) helped get started in politics. And I have no idea how 'solid' the lake's bed is either so there may also be significant loss by seepage.
Simplicity is beautiful, no criticism just an addition to the conversation. Seepage is one issue I hadn't considered. I liked how you posited the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
MBIE published an LCOE tool in 2021 which basically says the same thing: “Using default assumptions, the tool says that for the current point in time, the next generation plants likely to be built are either wind or hydro. The combination of declining wind technology costs and low discount rates caused the LCOE of wind to reach as low as $54 per MWh. However, the tool does not allow for the falling cost of both wind and solar in the future.”
Glad you responded Edward. Thank you. I asked for credible data, which from a very quick look neither of these are. Neither a government source or a vested-interest source are credible. However I will examine them in detail and get back to you; just a bit busy today so will no doubt take at least a few days. I'll either contact you directly or write a post which I will bring to your attention.
Meanwhile, can you confirm for me please
1. Your academic qualifications.
2. Whether you do research either as a contractor or employee for any Union in New Zealand or internationally? Or any government; the New Zealand Government or internationally. If so please name them for me.
And still They pretend We cannot extract energy from the sea of it We swim in - for only the initial cost of building the apparati needed initially, and then... With free energy flowing, the costs of everything will drop and drop... 100% of the cost of EVERYTHING is energy. The resources sit here freely, but it takes energy to put them into useful configuration.
Free energy makes Their power tool - ONLY power tool - pointless.
Agreed. We'll get there. Maybe not in my lifetime but at least we're progressing. Just need to fight the fires first imo. Then we'll rebuild. And you're doing great work on making sure there is something to rebuild with.
Truly I am hoping We do not need to rebuild. I agree the probabilities that We can succeed before They pull the final card out of the tower They have built for Us. I am focusing on enough of Us sharing the ideas I offer such that enough of Us get a hold of the steering here, and co-create a world where free energy flows, and We all can fulfill Our potential.

Working as an engineer. But no wooden shoes.
Lived here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhenen
Worked for a US company called Micromotion/Rosemount in Veenendaal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veenendaal

Didn't hear about Orsted. Well well. Another renewable energy company that needs money from the taxpayer to survive.
Corporate welfare keeps most of these companies, if not all, afloat.
Unusual post. I was spending the Easter weekend with my family. The numbers I mentioned are from the Sept 2024 IRENA report: https://www.irena.org/Publications/2024/Sep/Renewable-Power-Generation-Costs-in-2023

Edward, what it "sounds like" is irrelevant. Will you respond to my request or not?
No why would I let you drag this discussion into identity politics
Thank you. That's all I wanted to know.
